Unity In Diversityby Katherine Karsono Jakarta is defined by its heterogeneity in terms of the various social strata situated densely without any real boundary. In order to create a project which explores the diversity of an area, a site in Grogol is selected due to the unique various social strata in it. The chosen site houses multiple scales of buildings which comprise residential, institutional and commercial programs.
Vernacular Identity and Passive Climate Control The architectural strategy chosen for this design is based on the idea of ¬vernacular identity and passive climate system. This strategy tries to develop and transform the intelligence embedded in vernacular design and materials while combining them with well-proven modern technology. Vernacular identity is approached by the reuse and adaptation of old technology. The main principle of the design is in the building envelope which allows air penetration into the building while allowing light admission at its maximum. The use of natural/traditional material allows the building to “breathe”.
The building is raised in order to allow sunlight travels under the floor plate, Ground humidity is also avoided by raising the building’s ground level slightly higher than its actual position.
