_{Jakarta has been competing as if it will be acclaimed as contemporary city. As a capital city, it has been through several evolutions, such as an urban lifestyle. Heterogeneousness becomes a responding issue. It can be seen within the area of Kemang, which is regarded as a region that fuses diversity through the presence of ex-patriat from all over the world, engaging from cultural, social and economical aspects.

What makes Kemang interesting is the origins of the area itself. It shall be noted that Kemang has their custom roots as the early inhabitant of Jakarta, which was derived from the agricultural site, and then advancing to become a commercial estate and even bigger commercial site up today. Modernization covers almost the major area of kemang. It can be stated that it has almost forgotten its cultural roots, trapped under modernization which is happening for years. as we can see, the using eco-friendly material, complete with its good sense of air and sunlight circulation, now have been replaced by tons of glass material, which is ironically producing a glass house effect, a common problem leads to global warming.

As this heterogeneousness, there is no more exotic touch of authentical and historical Jakarta. Nevertheless, it’s crucial to bring back the cultural contents, that has been long abandoned.

Cultural mission is brought within a vernacular architecture, which was adapted from values of Betawi’s architecture and built upon foundation of how the condition of the area is. Preservation of Betawi culture can be brought live again, by putting program alley, floating stage, commercial area and open space library.

Hence, Betawi’s architecture perfectly matches the principles of sustainable architecture, which is based on the values of environmental, economical and social aspects. Open design can be seen from the ground plan, method of air circulation system and natural sunlight also draw certain kind of mentality and identity of Betawi people. In addition to this, the presence of floating stage also adds up to the stability of air humidity, and last but not least, it can be regarded as soul of the building site.

Air circulation which will not be hindered by partitions or the over-usage of glass facade. This will reduce the usage of electrical energy within air conditioner up to 80%, although it isn’t an easy solutio for Jakarta as humid place to live in. On the other hand, wood as the main material for Betawi’s architecture, as an act of maximizing the potential within nature, meets the standard of sustainable architecture based on economical aspect.}
